In the early hours of Wednesday, 31 July 2024, Sheikh Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau and a prominent Palestinian Resistance fighter, was martyred in a terrorist attack by the occupying Israeli regime, while attending the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected President of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Tehran.
The assassination of Martyr Sheikh Ismail Haniyeh, as one of the leading figures of Palestinian Resistance, once again highlights the aggressive and criminal nature of the Zionist regime. This terrorist act is not only a blatant violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter but also poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security.
This act is part of the ongoing assassination of Palestinian Resistance leaders by the Zionist regime in various countries. However, the assassination of Sheikh Haniyeh is part of a broader genocide plan against Palestinians, especially in the past ten months, aiming to increase insecurity in the West Asia region.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran emphasizes that the United States, as a supporter and accomplice of the Zionist regime, is responsible for the continuation of occupation and genocide against Palestinians and must be held accountable for this heinous terrorist act.
The Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns this aggressive act by the Zionist regime and, asserting its inherent right to respond appropriately to this aggression, expects the international community and various countries to seriously and effectively hold the Zionist regime accountable for these crimes. Necessary political, legal, and punitive measures must be taken against this rogue regime.
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran extends its condolences and congratulations on the martyrdom of this great fighter and his companions to the Supreme Leader of Iran, Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Islamic Ummah, the Palestinian nation, the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), the family of this dear martyr, supporters of the Palestinian cause, and freedom-seekers worldwide.
