Cape Town’s steampunk-inspired artisan coffee shop Truth has made international headlines for it’s quirky aesthetics now the brand’s owner has partnered with a beauty range for a different grind.
The recycled coffee grinds – obtained after making customers’ morning Cappuccinos or Americanos – has been given a second life, as an active compound in Blür Beauty’s new skincare range.
Founder of Blür Beauty, Jamie Cleaver, decided to use recycled coffee grinds in various skincare products, including scrubs, serums and oils.
Cleaver said she wanted to reuse the coffee grinds leftover from her morning cup of coffee, as her household has always believed in reusing materials where possible.
“The coffee grinds have a rough texture, which I thought could make an excellent exfoliator,” she said.
“After researching the effects of coffee on the skin, we approached industry experts to help us develop and create our range of products made primarily through using upcycled coffee.”
Blür Beauty decided to work with local coffee shop Truth Coffee to recycle their coffee grinds.
Once dried, the reused coffee is blended with a variety of essential oils like almond and patchouli. One of the items even makes use of an upcycled coffee oil.
Cleaver said that one of the ingredients, caffeic acid, has been proven to boost collagen levels and reduce the premature ageing of cells when applied.
“When applied to certain areas of the body, such as the thighs and buttocks where cellulite is most present, the coffee by-product contains caffeine, which stimulates dilation when applied to the surface of the skin, while the scrubbing motion increases circulation.”
Cleaver said Blür Beauty’s brand is all about encouraging body positivity, and wanting women to love the skin they’re in.
“Feeling beautiful inside and out is about owning your body as it is, with all of its dimples and wrinkles. We only have one body to live our best life in and it starts by owning your beautiful’ every day.”
The brand also adheres to clean beauty principles in its production. The range is vegan, uses organic products and is cruelty-free with eco-friendly packaging.
