An act of kindness in the form of care packages brightened the day for residents of a Fish Hoek women’s shelter in commemoration of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

The donations were a part of a collaborative effort by Weekend Argus together with Essence Cosmetics, Jive and Bonaqua to give back to organisations working to tackle GBV.

Around 30 care packages were handed over to the safe house on November 25.

Independent Media’s marketing co-ordinator, Rehana Rutti, said commitments to supporting efforts to combat GBV should be more than just words.

“Violence against women and children remains a serious, widespread problem with enormous impacts and social costs. If we are to make a positive difference to our society then our actions need to be much more meaningful than words,” she said.

The Safe House’s founder and CEO Kathy Cronje said they were grateful to receive packages for the ladies.

“This sponsorship will not only brighten their day but also bring hope,” said Cronje.

“Running a safe house would not be possible (on our own). There are a lot of organisations helping us monetary-wise but also through services.”

One of the women at the safe house said every bit of kindness always brightened their day.

“This donation is truly a blessing to the safe house. It will also help us to feel special again. Many of us don’t feel like we are worth anything,” she said
