In aid of Breast Cancer Awareness month, one courageous survivor is sharing her story of how she overcame this disease during a Facebook Live on the Weekend Argus Facebook page.
Bev Haywood, who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, lived to tell the story of how she beat cancer. Now she wants to share her experience with other cancer patients.
After her diagnosis, she joined Reach for Recovery’s programme that offers practical and emotional support to breast cancer patients and their families.
“It was one of the most positive experiences I’ve ever gone through. I’ve worked with three patients and these people are so inspirational,” she said.
Haywood said cancer has been her biggest teacher.
“I’ve turned this disease into a positive and meaningful experience, and you can do the same,” she said.
“Coming out on the other side of this meant realising that I have been given a second chance. That second chance made me feel like I want to give back,” she added.
A pivotal lesson for Haywood during the past two years was to give back to other people who have also been diagnosed with cancer.
“While having my treatment done and speaking to one of the doctors, I was able to reflect on how I got through chemotherapy with minimal symptoms,” she said.
“I had no nausea and vomiting and only suffered from hair loss, so I’ve decided it is time to give back,” she added.
Haywood said cancer taught her about herself, her coping mechanisms and other people.
“It teaches you to respect people in a way that you never have before. The most incredible part was that wherever I went, I was always received cheerfully in the hospital,” she said.
Her message to cancer patients is that a positive mindset goes a long way.
“I went in positively and at no stage did I ever doubt whether I would make it or not. The positive mindset is half the battle,” she said.
Tune into the Weekend Argus Facebook page on Thursday, October 20, at 1 PM, to hear Bev Haywood’s story.
