Bloemfontein - Six people died and 50 others were injured on Monday morning after their bus crashed into a stationary truck along the N8, about 15 km outside of Bloemfontein in the Free State.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics and several other emergency services found the bus with its entire side ripped open. The bus and the truck were on the side of the road.
He said paramedics found several injured passengers lying next to the bus.
"Paramedics assessed the patients and found that six women had sustained fatal injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead," said Meiring.
He said about 50 other people were injured in the crash. Their injuries ranged from minor to critical.
"One of the critically injured was airlifted by the Provincial Services Helicopter to a hospital for urgent treatment," said Meiring.
Local authorities were on the scene investigating the cause of the crash.
