The body of a Johannesburg woman was identified by her family after she drowned at Illovo Beach, south of Durban, a week after they reported her missing.
The family spokesperson, Dawn Gounden, of Renegades Search and Rescue, said Janine Chetty, 35, was visiting Durban. Her body was found by residents on September 21.
“Her family filed a missing person's report and contacted a missing person’s organisation called VCIN. The organisation circulated Chetty’s photograph in the hope of locating her. VCIN then contacted us to assist and we linked Chetty to the person located on the beach. Her family was notified and they thereafter proceeded to Durban to identify her."
Added Gounden: "Her family is experiencing an immense loss and they are devastated by the circumstances of her death. They commend the efforts of all the search and rescue organisations, as well as the police, who were involved in bringing closure to them."
Gounden said the family described Chetty as a travel lover, who had a kind spirit.
