The Basadi In Music Awards have teamed up with the Creative Arts Directorate of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, for a skills transfer programme to develop the next generation of creatives.
Through this collaboration, there will be workshops to educate women interested in working in production spaces like sound engineering, stage management, lighting, and behind the camera.
A total of 15 applicants will be chosen for a paid internship of R3000 each, after which they will be given the chance to work at this year’s awards show, on August 10.
As a platform to open doors for women in the music industry, the programme is a crucial component of the awards, which is dedicated to becoming more than just an awards show.
A development showcase will also be part of the programme, where eight artists will be invited to perform and display their craft, giving them visibility, experience, and a stipend. Candidates will also get a letter of recommendation.
The workshop is scheduled for August 6 at the Lesedi Theatre at Johannesburg Theatre, starting at 10am and ending at 2pm.
China Mashinini, HOD for the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation, expressed excitement over the partnership with Basadi In Music Awards.
Mashinini emphasized the initiative’s significance in addressing the skills gap, and fostering opportunities for talented women in the production and entertainment sectors.
“By offering technical skills workshops and hands-on experience, we are empowering young women to become leaders in their fields and contributing to the vibrant future of the arts in South Africa. We are committed to supporting such transformative programmes that uplift our communities and celebrate the creative talents of our people.”
Hloni Modise Matau, CEO of Basadi in Music Awards, said the collaboration will equip candidates with the necessary tools of their craft.
“I am very excited about this partnership. Firstly, this is the first time we are supported by the government, and secondly, this is a project close to my heart because skills transfer is an important pillar of Basadi in Music Awards.
“I am excited for the candidates that will work at the Basadi In Music Awards, as they will receive the tools they need to look for employment. We live in a country where experience is the main thing industries look for, and I am super proud that we will be able to provide that to these young women.”
The prestigious awards are set to happen on August 10 with Unathi Nkayi announced as the host of the event.
