Cruising simply isn’t reserved for retired married couples anymore.

In fact, the latest figures from Cruise Lines International Association’s “State of the Cruise Industry Report 2024” reveal that today’s average cruiser is a sprightly 46 years old, and that a whopping 36% of cruisers are under 40.

The data also shows that an impressive 84% of Gen X, 81% of Millennials and 74% of Gen Z who have dipped their toes into the cruising world say they can’t wait to do it again.

So, what’s got younger generations so excited about holidays at sea?

Kevin Bubolz, Norwegian Cruise Line’s vice president and managing director continental Europe, Middle East and Africa, provides reasons why younger generations are considering cruising.

Affordability and budgeting

According to Bubolz, the best part about cruises is you get to see multiple destinations for the cost of a single trip, and with the convenience of only unpacking once.

He added that while it’s important to note that some experiences, such as shore excursions and speciality dining usually come at an extra cost, the core elements of a cruise – accommodation, meals and entertainment – are all bundled into one convenient price.

“At Norwegian Cruise Line, we believe that incredible at-sea holidays should be accessible to everyone. Our Free at Sea offers, combined with the all-inclusive nature of cruising, make it possible for travellers to experience the world without breaking the bank.

“From unlimited dining at various restaurants to world-class entertainment, there’s so much included in your fare, making budgeting a breeze,” he said.

Variety of experiences

Bubolz also said that modern cruise lines cater to an incredibly diverse range of interests, including adrenaline junkies craving high-octane thrills, wellness-focused travellers looking to unwind, and social butterflies who can’t get enough of pulsating nightclubs, live music and themed parties.

The cruise expert also said that NCL’s Freestyle Cruising concept allows you to design your holiday on your terms.

“No rigid schedules, no assigned seating at dinner, as you choose what you want to do and when you want to do it. Want to sleep in and grab a leisurely brunch? Go for it.

“Feel like trying a different restaurant every night? No problem. It’s your holiday, your way,” said Bubolz.

He also said there are many different types of cruises available, including themed cruises and even relaxing river cruises.

“Classic ocean cruises take you to incredible destinations around the globe, while river cruises offer a more intimate experience.

Family-friendly

Another reason why cruises are growing in popularity is they are family-friendly. He highlighted that for families with kids, cruises can be a game-changer.

“Many cruise lines have kids’ clubs offering age-appropriate activities and entertainment.

“Toddlers can splash around in mini water parks; tweens can join scavenger hunts and dance parties; and teens have their own hangouts, with video games, sports activities and even DJ workshops,” he said.

Bubolz said that with so much for the kids to do on board, parents can relax and enjoy well-deserved me time.
