DESPITE the dark cloud hanging over Cricket South Africa (CSA) following their decision to go ahead with the bilateral series against Afghanistan – a country ruled by the Taliban, which perpetuates the deterioration of women’s rights in that country – this month, CSA yesterday announced Pearl Maphoshe as chairperson of the board of directors, with Adv Ncumisa Mayosi appointed as lead independent director.
Undoubtedly, this is a move that further emphasises CSA’s stance on women’s rights in the country and globally.
After all, CSA professionalised women’s cricket last year, broadcast the T20 Pro League live, and won silver at the 2024 African Games.
As a result, the organisation received recognition at the renowned GSports Awards ceremony in Johannesburg last week, winning the Federation of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
With 19 years of diverse executive experience across multiple industries, Maphoshe has expertise in both board and executive leadership. She has served as a non-executive director on the boards of Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed companies and their subsidiaries.
Maphoshe was appointed to the board of CSA as an independent non-executive director in November 2022 and chaired the human resources and remuneration subcommittee.
She currently chairs the HR and compensation commission of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee and is chairperson of human capital and Remco at Medshield Medical Scheme, independent expert on the HR and remuneration committee of the Government Employees Pension Fund, and an external expert on the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s HR committee, among others.
Mayosi has been appointed as the lead independent director of the CSA Board. She is a member of the Cape Bar of Advocates and serves as a trustee of the Archbishop Tutu Intellectual Property Trust.
She was chairperson of the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board before being appointed as an independent non-executive director on the CSA Board in October 2023.
She has served as a member on the University of Cape Town Council and the Walter Sisulu University Council, where she was chairperson of the appeals committee.
