Tributes have poured in for Nkandla Mayor, Mbhekiseni Biyela who died this week.

Biyela has been described as a dedicated public servant. He was laid to rest on Friday.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in a statement said Biyela’s death was a devastating loss for the Party, as he had served with unwavering dedication and commitment in every role entrusted to him by the IFP.

“As Mayor of Nkandla and Constituency Secretary he was a diligent, hardworking, and principled deployee who exemplified the IFP’s values in his service to the people,” read the statement

The party described his passing as a significant blow to the IFP, noting that the area of Nkandla’s importance as a highly contested political terrain in South Africa.

“He played a pivotal role in consolidating and sustaining the IFP’s gains in Nkandla, working tirelessly to maintain the Party’s influence and stability. His leadership, discipline, and integrity as Mayor of Nkandla have been an inspiration to many, and the IFP is immensely proud of the legacy of service he leaves behind,” read the statement.

Mzwanele Manyi, spokesperson for The JG Zuma Foundation said Biyela’s commitment to the people of Nkandla was unwavering.

“ He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of the community, embodying the values of service, humility, and leadership, adding that the mayor’s vision and dedication had left an indelible mark on Nkandla and beyond.

“On behalf of the JG Zuma Foundation and the Patron, His Excellency President Zuma, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Biyela family, the Nkandla Local Municipality, and all who had the privilege of working with and knowing Mayor Biyela. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family and loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” said Manyi.

African National Congress (ANC) provincial spokesperson, Mafika Mndebele, also expressed condolences to the Biyela family.
