EThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba, has congratulated the Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) for being named as South Africa’s Best Convention Centre at the World Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) Awards 2024.
The ICC was awarded during a grand ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on September, 4.
Xaba said the ICC’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as it secures the title for the second time in just four years, having previously won in 2020. This year, the ICC outperformed other leading South African convention centres, including the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, and the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg.
Xaba lauded the ICC’s continued excellence, noting that this recognition underscores Durban’s growing status as a key destination for global events.
“As the leadership of the city, we are thrilled to see the Durban ICC honoured once again as the best convention centre in South Africa,” Xaba said.
He said the prestigious award not only celebrates the ICC’s world-class facilities and service but also highlights Durban’s emergence as a prominent gateway into Africa.
“The ICC’s success significantly boosts our city’s profile, attracts international conferences, and contributes greatly to both tourism and local business development,” said Xaba.
Moreover, he said the timing of the ICC’s award coincides with the recent reopening of the Hilton Hotel, located in close proximity to the convention centre. He said this positions the City as a top destination for international delegates.
“Together, these developments reinforce our city’s ability to host and deliver high-profile events with excellence,” explained Xaba.
He highlighted the synergy between these developments, noting that the reopening of the Hilton Hotel enhances Durban’s appeal as a MICE destination.
The Mayor also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the Durban ICC team, led by CEO Lindiwe Rakharebe.
“This award is a testament to the tireless efforts of the Durban ICC team, whose commitment to exceptional service and creating memorable experiences for delegates is truly commendable,” Xaba said.
Rakharebe who received the award on behalf of the Durban ICC, expressed her pride and continued commitment to excellence. “Winning this award again is a tremendous honour and reaffirms our status as South Africa’s leading convention centre,” she said.
“While we have a strong track record of success, we remain dedicated to enhancing the experience we offer our clients. Our goal is to ensure that each event held at the Durban ICC not only meets but exceeds expectations.”
Rakharebe highlighted the key factors contributing to the ICC’s success, including Durban’s favourable weather, high-quality infrastructure, and rich cultural offerings.
“A successful MICE destination is more than just business – it’s about creating a memorable experience for delegates. Durban’s pleasant climate, excellent infrastructure, and diverse cultural attractions combine to provide exceptional event experiences for every client,” she added.
