Celebrated actress and humanitarian Nomzamo Mbatha has added another feather to her cap.
Mbatha was recently announced as the inaugural Global Ambassador for The Earthshot Prize.
The “Shaka Illembe” award-winning actress currently serves as a Goodwill ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency as well as working on other projects aimed at sustainable change.
Her new role is committed to environmental action.
During the year-long ambassador programme, Nomzamo will promote innovative environmental solutions and introduce a larger audience to the discussion of important, original solutions.
Conservationist Robert Irwin, son of the legendary late Australian wildlife conservationist and “The Crocodile Hunter” host Steve Irwin, has also been announced as a Global Ambassador alongside Mbatha.
“I am so excited to continue working with The Earthshot Prize as a Global Ambassador and using my platform to advocate for solutions that fix our climate as well as protect and restore the planet,” said Mbatha.
She added: “As an African, I am passionate about highlighting the incredible work of innovators and entrepreneurs across the continent, and I can’t wait to work with Robert and others within The Earthshot Prize to honour and celebrate African solutions in Cape Town later this year.”
Irwin shared that the organisation is a beacon of hope for all those who care about the environment.
“Healthy oceans, ecosystems, and species equal a healthy planet, and The Earthshot Prize recognises the importance of investing in and helping grow solutions that protect these critical resources.
“I’m honoured to join Nomzamo as the first Earthshot Global Ambassadors to help place a brighter spotlight on the inspiring change-makers saving the planet.”
In addition to this, humanitarian and restauranteur José Andrés, environmentalist and activist Wanjira Mathai, and indigenous activist and author Nemonte Nenquimo will join an expanded Earthshot Prize Council, which consists of HRH Prince William, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, actress Cate Blanchett, Sir David Attenborough, Indra Nooyi and fashion designer Stella McCartney.
Together, the members of the Earthshot Prize Council and Global Ambassadors come from 13 nations on six continents, with backgrounds ranging from banking to science, art and culture, diplomacy, indigenous rights, and many other fields and industries.
The Earthshot Prize’s global partners, members and the ambassadors will work together to expand the organisation’s goals of becoming a platform for impact by providing resources and additional support for innovative solutions and uniting people worldwide in a movement centred on urgent action.
