NEARLY a decade after the original hit cinema’s, Disney’s “Inside Out” 2 has made a triumphant return, and it’s doing far more than just tickling your emotions. This sequel has become a record-breaking sensation in the world of animation.
The sequel picks up with Riley, now a teenager, navigating the tumultuous waters of adolescence.
In the first film, we were introduced to Riley’s core emotions - Joy, Sadness, and Anger -voiced by Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black, respectively. They were the primary drivers of her emotional experiences, guiding her through life’s ups and downs.
“Inside Out” 2 takes this familiar set-up and adds new layers, both literally and metaphorically.
As Riley heads to summer camp, her emotional landscape is further complicated by the arrival of new emotions: Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Nostalgia (June Squibb).
These new emotions introduce a chaotic but engaging dynamic, reflecting the complexities of teenage life and adding fresh challenges for Riley and her emotional team.
Since its release in June, “Inside Out” 2 has shattered numerous box office records. It has become South Africa’s highest-grossing film of 2024 and achieved unprecedented success on a global scale.
In domestic earnings at an impressive $861 million (R15.7 billion) internationally, the film’s global total has soared to $1.46bn, surpassing the previous record held by Disney’s “Frozen II”, which collected $1.45bn.
“Inside Out” 2 remarkably also surpassed “Barbie” at $1.446bn to become the 13th-highest-grossing film of all time.
It holds the distinction of being the fastest animated film to cross the $1bn mark, achieving this milestone in just 19 days.
