Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has revealed that he held interviews with three Major League Soccer teams as he looks to get back into the game following his exit from Manchester United.

McCarthy was earlier this season linked with Mamelodi Sundowns, but it’s America’s MLS that he has his sights on.

“I had three interviews in the MSL. That’s where I could be targeting to go,” McCarthy said at a Carling Black Label Cup media event on Tuesday without revealing the teams he spoke with.

“For now, they are towards the end of their season and they are just waiting for the play-offs to crown the champions. After that, they will decide,” said Bafana Bafana’s record goalscorer.

“But I’m looking forward to one of those positions in the MLS which I was interviewed for. I would really like to coach there and improve my career,” said McCarthy, who was a member of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff for two seasons at Manchester United.

McCarthy added he had set his ambitions very high over his potential move to the United States.

“If you dream small, you achieve small, but if you dream big, you achieve big things and that’s what I’m doing. I am dreaming big and I am looking at going to the MLS and experience the game there and see what we can achieve.

“I have set my ambitions very high and that’s why I went for those interviews,” he said.

On his meeting with Mamelodi Sundowns’ sporting director Flemming Berg, McCarthy said there was nothing to it.

“We bumped into each other at the airport. We recognized each other and we just spoke.”

Since hanging up his boots, McCarthy has been in charge of Cape Town City and AmaZulu. He helped the Capetonians win their first-ever trophy when they lifter the MTN8 title in 2018, and led AmaZulu to their first-ever CAF Champions League qualification.
