Despite being benched by Mamelodi Sundowns, Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau have retained their places in the latest Bafana Bafana squad that was announced on Thursday afternoon, while Al Ahly star Percy Tau was left out once again.
Hugo Broos’ men will go up against Congo in two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month. The first game will be played on October 11 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha, while the second game on October 15 will be on the road.
When naming the team, Broos kept faith in the duo of Mokoena and Mudau, who have barely featured at all for their club Mamelodi Sundowns this season. Mudau made his first appearance as a second half substitute in the 2-1 win against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium.
Captain Ronwen Williams back in the mix
Broos has also recalled captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who missed the last two qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan due to injury.
Williams’ return will be welcomed by the fans after a number of goalkeeping blunders by Veli Mothwa led to Bafana missing out on maximum points from their game against Uganda. Mothwa has not been recalled to the squad.
The skipper, who was recently named as one of the nominees for the Yashin Trophy, is currently in the form of his life at the moment.
Sphephelo Sithole and Siyabonga Ngezana have been left out due to injury.
South Africa are currently second in Group K of qualifiers after their draw against Uganda and win over South Sudan last month.
