Proteas’ opener Tony de Zorzi has taken to Test cricket like a duck to water.
In the recent first Test against the West Indies, the 28-year-old put his hand up with two good scores of 78 and 45 as the rain-affected match ended in a draw.
The match was just De Zorzi’s fifth Test, and he played with the confidence of an experienced campaigner and already looks like he’s cemented his place in the side.
Speaking about his performance in the first Test, De Zorzi was happy with how things went, and how he was able to contribute to the team’s total in either innings.
“I thought my performance was good,” De Zorzi said when speaking to journalists on Tuesday.
“Both times, I played with decent intent. Aiden [Markram] and mine’s second innings partnership got the team off to a good start and allowed guys like [Tristan] Stubbs to come in and express themselves, which is what we want.
“So, I think ultimately, it was a good performance for the team, and I think I should have probably kicked on from the 70 , but I’m still just happy I was able to contribute.”
Stubbs thriving at number three
Before the Test, a lot was made about Stubbs’ role as the team’s new number three. At Queen's Park Oval, the 23-year-old from Gqeberha scored 20 in the first innings, and a well played 68 in the second.
After that knock, De Zorzi praised the youngster for how he responded, and believes he will continue to thrive in the position.
“He’s one of the most talented guys I’ve played with, so I think there was no doubt in my mind that eventually it would come right,” he said of Stubbs.
“I think he’s one of those guys that can play all the formats. He’s a real, real talent, so I think this probably gave him a bit of a relief so that he could have that feeling that he belongs in the format. But I’m sure he’s going to be pretty exciting going forward. As he gets older, more comfortable, he’s definitely going to thrive.”
‘First Test hundred will come when it’s supposed to’
One thing that De Zorzi is yet to achieve in his short Test career is raising his bat to celebrate reaching triple figures. His best innings is the 85 he scored against the West Indies at the Wanderers last year, however, he feels confident his first hundred won’t be far off.
“It’ll come when it’s supposed to. I’m obviously doing the work that’s intended for me to get it and I’m pretty comfortable with my game. Hopefully next time it doesn’t hit my glove and I’ll get over the line.”
