The MK Party has welcomed the resignation of Dondo Mogajane from his position at the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and various other boards on which he served, describing it as a crucial step towards restoring public trust in the management of government employees' financial resources.
Mogajane's resignation follows increasing scrutiny over his role in financial governance, especially after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, prior to presenting the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, highlighted the "reputational risk" posed by Mogajane’s leadership at the GEPF.
Mogajane is also facing allegations of accepting a R1 million gratification from Tshifhiwa Matodzi, the convicted former chairman of VBS Mutual Bank, during his tenure as director-general of National Treasury.
This payment was allegedly made in exchange for allowing the defunct bank to continue taking municipal deposits in violation of the law.
In a statement, MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela emphasised that the party was the first to advocate for Mogajane to step aside in light of ongoing concerns about the GEPF.
"The MK Party stands proud of its proactive stance in ensuring that public institutions are led by individuals whose actions inspire confidence.
‘’Our call for Mogajane’s resignation was driven by unwavering commitment to protecting public institutions from potential reputational damage and fostering an environment where trust in management is paramount.’’
MKP said they prioritise leadership that is accountable to the people, and ensuring that the GEPF is not tainted by reputational damage which is crucial for the trust of millions of government employees whose future security is in the Fund's hands."
The MKP also underscored the importance of a fair and thorough legal process when addressing misconduct within public institutions.
"We remain firm in our belief that public figures must be held accountable through due process and the rule of law," Ndhela added.
In addition, the MKP pointed out that those who have publicly championed anti-corruption efforts must also face scrutiny when there is evidence suggesting their involvement in any form of misconduct.
"Accountability must be applied consistently to all, regardless of political or public stances.
"Only through impartial investigations and decisive action can we restore integrity to our public institutions,’’ said Ndhlela.
The MK Party also reiterated its support for a full investigation into any alleged misconduct linked to the former GEPF board member, urging law enforcement to pursue these matters with the diligence and impartiality required to preserve public confidence in state institutions.
"The suffering of many, especially those affected by the VBS Bank crisis, is a stark reminder of the need to protect public funds and ensure that the financial well-being of the people is safeguarded," Ndhlela said.
"We will continue to advocate for strong policies and actions that champion ethical leadership and strengthen the institutions entrusted with managing public resources."
The MKP remains committed to ensuring that public institutions are free from corruption, with the ultimate goal of restoring and maintaining public trust for the benefit of all South Africans.
