The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Pretoria condemned the persistent and deeply rooted racism at Pretoria High School for Girls following the suspension of 12 learners amid racism allegations.
The school's governing body is set to hold a disciplinary hearing later this month after black learners reported that the white girls had set up a WhatsApp group chat to discuss them.
The black learners further claimed that the principal and the school's management team did not take action following their complaints and that white learners received preferential treatment from teachers.
They also bemoaned the alleged selective application of the school code of conduct, with harsher treatment for black learners compared to white learners.
In a statement released on Thursday, EFF’s regional chairperson, Obakeng Ramabodu, said there have been numerous protests and calls for change at the school. However, Ramabodu criticised that the school continues to be a hotbed of racial discrimination and inequality.
“This incident is not an isolated event but rather part of a troubling pattern of racism and discrimination that has plagued the school for years.
“In 2020, black learners bravely took to the streets to protest against the school's discriminatory hair policy and the alleged racist behaviour exhibited by both teachers and students.”
Ramabodu said despite well-documented incidents and the courageous efforts of learners to bring change, the school's response has been inadequate.
“It is disheartening that the DA Mayor, who is more concerned with public relations than addressing serious issues, remains silent on this matter. His inaction and failure to condemn these racist practices make him complicit in supporting racism,” he said.
He further added that the school's teaching and learning environment has become a battleground where black students are routinely subjected to discriminatory practices and micro-aggressions.
“This toxic environment not only hampers the educational experiences of black students but also contradicts the core values of respect, inclusivity, and mutual understanding that should be at the heart of any educational institution.”
