A woman has been arrested in connection with the drowning of a six-year-old girl in the Eastern Cape.
Police said 23-year-old Noluvuyo Sinyikatha appeared in the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court and has been charged for murder.
She is expected to apply for bail on Monday, September 9.
The drowning incident took place on Wednesday in the Upper Ngqwarha location in Mqanduli.
Police said it is alleged the accused lured the child to a nearby dam.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said: “She allegedly drowned her and left her in the dam to die.
“The deceased body was spotted by a passer-by while floating in water, and police were summoned.”
Police said an inquest docket was initially opened by police, but following a thorough investigation Sinyikatha was arrest and the case was changed to murder.
The accused remains in police custody.
Police said the accused is not related to the child, but had been staying with the family of the deceased child.
Last month, The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the body of an infant washed up on Clifton 3rd Beach in Cape Town.
The body was discovered by a member of the public at 11.25am on Saturday, August 24.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said: “On arrival on the scene, the unidentified decomposed body of an infant was secured on the beach for police detectives before being taken into the care of police and Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket and are investigating.”
