A white 1959 Chevrolet Corvette has been sold for R1 008 000 at a Stephan Welz auction in Cape Town to a buyer from Johannesburg.
The Corvette, first launched in 1953, has become a cult classic with an irresistible appeal, which is why people are prepared to pay top dollar for examples in good condition.
According to Anton Welz, director of Stephan Welz & Co, it is unusual to find this kind of car in such good condition in South Africa.
WIDELY COLLECTABLE
“Seven generations later it’s still considered an American classic, and is widely collectable,” he said. “The 1959 Corvette is from the model’s first generation, and only 9670 were made.”
Some famous owners of first-generation ‘Vettes include George Clooney, will.i.am and Jay Leno, although the identity of the buyer at the Cape Town auction is unknown. - Star Motoring
