Durban – eThekwini Municipality said that the city was not exempt from load shedding after Eskom announced that stage 4 power cuts would be implemented on Monday afternoon.
Earlier this month The Mercury’s sister publication the Sunday Tribune reported that the city was still exempt from load shedding due to the devastating floods last month and the impact on electricity infrastructure.
In a statement on Monday, the city explained that eThekwini was currently not exempt from load shedding.
“eThekwini is currently not exempt from load shedding. However, due to there being reduced loads as a result of the storm disaster, eThekwini did not have to shed any further load thus far. Currently, the full automated load shedding is not possible, but customers must remain prepared for load shedding.”
The statement added that due to there being many abnormal network configurations as a result of the storm disaster, customers may not currently be supplied in their normal load shedding blocks and that the stage of load shedding in eThekwini may differ from the national stages.
“The power system is dynamic and eThekwini will respond accordingly to requests from Eskom for purposes of national grid stability,” it said.
