The search for a missing diver believed to be from Gauteng, who went missing during a deep sea technical dive offshore of Sodwana Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast continues.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said NSRI St Lucia responded to Sodwana Bay on Monday, September 23, just before 3.40pm following reports of a diver missing offshore of Sodwana Bay.
NSRI launched a rescue craft at Sodwana Bay where an extensive search found no signs of the missing diver.
NSRI said the SAPS and Police Search and Rescue joined the extensive search efforts.
“On Tuesday an SA Air Force helicopter, from SAAF 15 Squadron, with police divers on-board, continued in the extensive search efforts, assisted by NSRI St Lucia rescue craft.
“The search has extended south to beyond St Lucia in the hope that the man surfaced and is adrift at sea.”
NSRI said there are still no signs of the missing diver and the search is continuing.
“All thoughts are with the family of the missing man in this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, with the school holidays upon us, the NSRI appealed to the public to follow the South African Weather Services (SAWS) forecast weather updates and to adhere to SAWS weather warnings.
The NSRI said bathers around the coast should swim at beaches protected by lifeguards and be aware of rip currents that constantly form at different places along the coastline.
“Parents and carers must ensure children have responsible adult supervision in and around water. Swimming pools should be cloaked in safety. We appeal to everyone to remain safe during the school vacation and the warmer weather.”
