Durban – The KZN Midlands is gearing up for the Light Up uMngeni Festive Fair.

The media launch last Friday for the fair was hosted by uMngeni mayor Chris Pappas, in partnership with uMngeni Tourism, at Karkloof Falls in Howick.

The Light Up uMngeni Festive Fair is set to take place on December 17 and 18 at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site.

Pappas said the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is alive with possibility and they wanted to create a municipality that opens up access to opportunities.

“We can’t do it alone as government and are doing it with relevant stakeholders, whether it is to address issues of environment or tourism, or other issues. In the end, we are building a municipality that can solve lots of problems in lots of different communities, and with partnerships and collaboration we can do that.”

Pappas said the fair was about bringing communities together.

“It's about communities from all over coming together to celebrate the festive season. We are asking people to come to the festival; it's a place where you will learn, have a great experience and never get bored. We are expecting between 4 000 and 8 000 people to attend Light Up uMngeni this year.”

He added that one of the highlights will be the lighting of the Christmas trees.

“There is also going to be live entertainment, a kids section , food stalls, educational activities and a lot more. One of the other big highlights will be the launch of the Matthew Willman exhibition for the very first time in South Africa.

“Matthew Willman is the official photographer of Nelson Mandela, and his work has been shown all over the world and we are very honoured that he has chosen uMngeni municipality to launch his exhibition of pictures of Nelson Mandela.”
