While the Olympics is all about the celebration of athletic excellence, it’s the opening ceremony that sets the stage for the sporting event.
It’s where countries get to show off their sports stars in their national-inspired outfits as they proudly wave their flags.
Even if you’re not a great sports enthusiast, you can still appreciate the looks that the designers in different countries come up with.
A few countries have already revealed their designs but there’s one country that has stood out from the rest.
Mongolia’s Olympic opening ceremony uniforms have received high praise for their intricate designs inspired by the country’s traditional clothing.
Sisters Michel and Amazonka Choigaalaa are the designers behind the garments.
The Ulaanbaatar-based pair have introduced two sets of outfits: one set for the flag bearers and another for the athletes.
The female athletes’ outfits come with ceremonial earrings and embroidered bags, while male flag-bearers will wear an archery hat, belt and traditional Mongolian boots.
The sophisticated designs incorporate the national colours of blue, red, and white, as well as various traditional patterns and motifs, including the “Soyombo” symbol that appears in the country’s flag.
The outfits took an average of 20 hours each to make.
After the design team revealed the costumes on their Instagram feed, users couldn’t stop singing their praises.
“Even me not being Mongolian would be happy to wear such dress! This is first gold medal for team Mongolia before the games even started!” wrote one Instagrammer.
“You won the gold medal for throwing down looks,” wrote another.
“It is the best-produced Olympic uniform of all time,” praised another.
On TikTok fashion writer Ryan Yip captioned his video, which has garnered 2.7million views, showing off the design: “Mongolia won Best Dressed for sure.”

His followers agree that the uniforms are by far the most beautiful they’ve seen.
One person commented: “The fact that the USA has worn the same variation of the same blazers and polos for years has me SO BORED. BUT THIS IS ART!!”
This year the USA team uniforms do look pretty much the same as they’ve always looked - even though they’ve been designed by Ralph Lauren.
