While most fashion trends leap off the runways, there are many that are copied from characters from movies or TV shows.
Let’s take the character Wednesday Addams played by Jenna Ortega from the hit Netflix series “Wednesday” for example.
When the series came out, romantic goth became a huge trend with many fashionistas turning to all-black ensembles for an edgy look.
Fashion enthusiasts look to movie and TV characters for style inspiration and often turn to Instagram to find looks.
A new study done by Public Desire ranks the most influential fashion characters of 2024 by analysing their Instagram hashtags, monthly global searches, as well as press coverage featuring their names.
The study examined 26 iconic fashion characters from movies and TV shows released within the past nine years.
Each character was then assigned a total trendsetter score, which determined their ranking in the study.
Harley Quinn from “Birds of Prey” leads the list with a trendsetter score of 45.30, and with the largest number of Instagram hashtags at 7,046,289.
The character also sees monthly global searches at 93,100 and has more than 7,715 articles written about her, making her the most influential fashion character of 2024.
If you’re a “Bridgerton” fan then it wouldn’t surprise you that the character Daphne Bridgerton from series comes in second with a trendsetter score of 38.11.
Her elegant style has earned the most monthly searches at 308,000 and 17,340 articles, including her name, highlighting her strong impact on fashion.
Emily Cooper from “Emily in Paris” ranks third with a score of 35.27.
The character is featured in the highest number of articles at 134,519 and has 17,330 Instagram hashtags for #EmilyCooperOutfit/Style/Fashion.
Estella, also known as Cruella de Vil from the movie “Cruella”, is fourth with a trendsetter score of 28.75.
Her style is captured in 640,307 Instagram hashtags, the second-largest number on the list.
Despite being featured in the fewest articles, at 776, the character name sees 236,000 monthly searches, the second-largest number.
Lady Whistledown is the second “Bridgerton” character among the most influential ones, taking the fifth spot.
Bella Baxter from the movie "Poor Things," released a year ago, holds the sixth position with a trendsetter score of 19.
Despite her relatively recent debut, Bella has earned a significant following, with 8,807 Instagram hashtags dedicated to her fashion, reflecting the growing interest in her style on social media.
Kate Bishop from “Hawkeye” is seventh with a trendsetter score of 11.92. Kate's look is searched 90,900 times globally each month, reflecting her growing popularity in the fashion world.
Despite being a newer character in the Marvel universe, she has already been featured in 4,215 articles, showcasing her impact as a fashion icon.
Eleven from “Stranger Things” (Season 3) ranks eighth with a trendsetter score of 8.39. Her retro and modern style blend has made her a fashion icon, reflected in 571,561 Instagram hashtags.
Sabrina Spellman from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” ranks ninth with a trendsetter score of 6.81. Released in 2018, making it the oldest show on the list, Sabrina's style has stood the test of time, earning her 348,727 Instagram hashtags.
Beth Harmon from “The Queen’s Gambit” rounds out the top ten with a trendsetter score of 6.18.
Her 1960s-inspired fashion, characterised by vintage looks, has resonated with fans, resulting in 77,967 Instagram hashtags.
A spokesperson from Public Desire commented on the study: “The influence of these characters extends far beyond the screen, as they set trends that resonate with audiences globally.
“Whether it’s Harley Quinn’s edgy aesthetic or Emily Cooper’s chic Parisian style, these figures have become modern fashion icons, shaping the way people dress and express themselves in everyday life,” she said.
