“Married at First Sight Mzansi” first season has wrapped up, leaving viewers wondering whether these matches are meant for each other.
Eight singles got married at first sight to complete strangers, trusting four relationship experts to pair them with their ideal spouse. The couples were married for six weeks and got time to get to know each other on and off the screen.
The reality show, which followed the four couples closely over six weeks, aired on Showmax and on DSTV’s Mzansi Magic channel 161.
Here are five moments that stood out from the 12 episodes of watching the couples navigate life in marriage.
Viewers are still awaiting to hear about the tell-all reunion show, which will give curious viewers the inside scoop on what has happened since decision day.
Unexpected Romantic Gesture
Out of the four couples, Thami Nyandeni and Zithobile Sibiya are the one couple that gave viewers very little hope of making it in their six week marriage, but their relationship survived, miraculously.
Zithobile was always crying and Thami called her a cry baby. Many had already anticipated divorce, as it seemed both of them were not too happy with each other, but the unexpected happened.
As the show progressed, they showed a lot of growth. In episode 10, Thami went the extra mile and surprised Zithobile with a romantic set-up, making a trail of red rose petals leading to a table set up in the kitchen/dining area.
Thami went all out, the gesture complete with decorations of more rose petals, balloons, candles and sparkling wine.
He also gifted her yellow roses which are her favourite and gifted her a box full of chocolates and snacks, satisfying her sweet tooth.
Biggest fight
What started out as a games night between the four couples ended in a fight between Khutso and Litsoanelo on episode 9.
While playing a game, Khutso was asked: “If you had a choice among the wives for a threesome, who would you choose, and why?”
Kutso replied he would recruit Boitshepo into their bedroom.
When Litsoanelo asked him about his response, he said Boitshepo was also into gyming, but this didn’t go down well with Litsoanelo.
Things got worse when Boitshepo was asked who else she would marry, sleep with and kill, and she responded she would marry and sleep with Khutso, which left Litsoanelo angry and in tears.
Litsoanelo insinuated that Khutso and Boitshepo are interested in each other. This sent Litsoanelo on a spiral as she went on to say to Sebenzile that if they both get dumped on decision day, then they know it was not about her.
Khutso responded by saying his wife does not trust their relationship. She soon left the venue and went back to their apartment in tears.
Most compatible
The marriage between Soweto’s Sebenzile Ngwenya and Pretoria’s Boitshepo Mashetla was the one with the least amount of disagreements on the show.
Sebenzile and Boitshepo showed moments of planning for the future. In episode 9, the couple continued to exude growth and maturity.
Their shared vision for their marriage kept viewers rooting for them every step of the way.
After receiving news that they will have to move out of the shows rented apartments, the couple had conversations of moving in together after moving out of the marital home provided by the show.
The couple discussed which areas would be ideal for them and they even went for apartment viewing.
As they work towards building a life together, they showed a shared vision and dedication. Their relationship was an example of what can happen when two people work together towards a common goal.
Meeting the family
In episode 8, Boitshepo and Sebenzile’s family meet for the first time at their apartment. Both families seemed to receive the partners well without any objections.
The couple told their families that while it was not nice not having all their family members present at the wedding, should they make it to the stage again, they will do things the right way with everyone present and involved.
Both families said they would support the couple if they decided to stay together.
Decision Day Divorce
After six weeks of being married, Thabang Mvuyane and Makhumo Ngobeni, were the only couple to get divorced on decision day.
Makhumo was the first to say her vows, indicating that she would lie to stay married to Thabang.
However, this was rejected by Thabang, who instead said he wanted a divorce, expressed that he thought he knew who he was marrying, but was met with a discovery that Makhumo is not who he thought she was.
He revealed that Makhumo lied to him and was not fully faithful to their marriage.
Thabang revealed that Makhumo was still speaking to an apparent ex-partner, a person she had been speaking to on the first night they got married.
The reunion show is expected this weekend.
