Maskandi artist Inkos'yamagcokama is set to host a one man show at the Playhouse Theatre, Durban, this November.
With the growing popularity of the genre, even among some urban people, the artist has revealed that this live concert will feature music from his upcoming album which is set to drop on November.
In an interview with IOL, the "National Anthem“ hitmaker shared that he has always wanted to host a one man show.
“The one man show has been a dream of mine for the longest time, seeing how the performances in the Maskandi genre are nowadays, the feeling and value of live performances with a band is something that adds a lot of value to the genre and I always thought this is something I can take beyond our borders,” he said.
The artist, whose real name is Scebi Dlamini, revealed that with his latest album “Van Toeka”, he wanted to create something that would be unique
“I wanted something that would be different and not be too ‘Maskandi’, while I also wanted something old school as the album theme and hence the title and artwork,” he said.
Inkos'yamagcokama described Maskandi as one of the genres that are deeply rooted in Zulu culture and it is up to us to preserve both Maskandi as well as our culture.
“When I do live performances at the bigger stages I like to fully dress in my Zulu attire ‘imvunulo’ and that is to remind people the essence of Maskandi and where it comes from,” said the artist.
He revealed that he has been inspired by performances at Sjava’s one man shows, where he has been previously invited to.
“I wish to also inspire more Maskandi artists to perform live with the band,” he added.
The “National Anthem” hit maker also shared that the love and support he received from fans has changed his life for the better.
“It is nice seeing many upcoming artists that are inspired by the sound and ‘ushuni’ that I play succeed,” he said.
Additionally, the Maskandi artist advised the upcoming artists to preserve the culture as the music and culture are very much aligned.
“Maskandi is a key pillar of our culture with its messaging, influence in how the Zulu culture is perceived as well as how it shapes young people that are growing up and aspiring to be the next Inkos'yamagcokama,” said Inkos'yamagcokama.
