DJ Sbu has stated his public support for underfire Miss SA contestant Chidimma Adetshina, while he has also hit back at those calling for a boycott of his energy drink Mofaya.
The energy drink is one of the Miss South Africa sponsors.
Some social media users attempted to call for a boycott of Mofaya following the recent afrophobic online outrage towards Adetshina, the divorced mother of one whose dad is Nigerian.
Adetshina was born in Soweto in 2001. Her mother is a South African citizen with roots to Mozambique. In terms of the law, Adetshina is thus a South African citizen as one of her parents has citizenship.
Miss SA has also confirmed she qualified to be in the running for Miss South Africa 2024 as she was a lawful holder of a South African identity document.
DJ Sbu, whose given name is Sibusiso Leope, released a video addressing the Adetshina matter.
“I think we’ve got selected outrage. I think sometimes we focus our energies where we are not supposed to be focusing our energies.
“What would it help a man to hate on a little girl who is pursuing a future and who was born in South Africa. And who entered Miss SA legitimately through a ID?” he said
He further mentioned that he is all about supporting, encouraging and pushing positivity for every young person who is aspiring to become educated and successful.
DJ Sbu also mentioned in the video that his grandfather was not from South Africa and posed a question to social media users that are attacking Adetshina and asked that since his grandfather is not from South Africa, is he also not a South African anymore? Regardless of him being born here?
“Imagine if you had started a petition to do something positive. You know I usually say to people, promote what you like instead of bashing what you hate”.
DJ Sbu advised people against the petitions that are calling for Adetshina’s removal from Miss SA competition.
He further stated that all that people are doing right now with this matter of Adetshina, is indirectly promoting Miss SA, marketing Mofaya to more people and they have popularised Adetshina as well.
“Whether she wins or doesn’t win the competition, you have already given her the spotlight,” he added.
