DURBAN - The spokesperson for the Umkhonto WeSizwe Military Veterans’ Association, Carl Niehaus, said it was a huge privilege and his duty to be able to vote.
Niehaus was speaking to the Daily News on Monday before casting his vote in his hometown of KwaDukuza in ward 30. He said every time he voted, he did so to honour and remember the comrades who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
“Despite serious challenges and problems that I am experiencing with some senior leaders of the African National Congress (ANC), I vote for the ANC because I am voting for the party as an organisation, not for them.”
“I hope the ANC will get a resounding victory, but these failed leaders who have sold out to White Monopoly Capital and are putting the ANC into disrepute and destroying our beloved liberation movement must go. Throughout my campaigning for the ANC in this election campaign, this is the message that I delivered over and over again.”
The former national spokesperson for the ruling party said the most important challenge that the country was faced with was to ensure that current difficult economic circumstances that people are faced with could be turned into a unique opportunity to fundamentally transform the unrepresentative and oppressive economic structure from one that serves the few to an economy that is broad-based and that serves and empowers the majority of black South Africans.
“It cannot be that in a country where the vast majority of the population are black and specifically African, that a minority of whites continue to control our economy. No self-respecting and proud African nation can allow that.
“We have to build that liberated and empowering economy that president OR Tambo envisaged, which will allow Africans to scale the commanding heights of our economy,” said Niehaus.
