Durban — A regional court recently sentenced a man to life imprisonment and eight years for house-breaking and the brutal murder of his partner.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the Estcourt Regional Court sentenced Khehla Majola, 39, to life and eight years imprisonment for the house-breaking and murder he committed in December 2021 in the Mabhalonini area.

Ramkisson-Kara said Majola and the deceased, Phumzile Angelina Malinga, were in a romantic relationship.

“A few months prior to the murder, they had an altercation, where Majola assaulted Malinga with a bush knife and fled the area. However, he returned in December, broke into the house during the night and stabbed her to death. He was arrested in January 2022 after Malinga’s family discovered he was hiding in a nearby area and alerted police.”

Ramkisson-Kara said that in court, Regional Court Prosecutor Nokulunga Ngcobo led the evidence of Malinga’s brother who was the only witness. His evidence directly linked Majola to the murder. In his evidence, Malinga’s brother also told the court of the impact her death has had on their family.

He said that his sister had died in his arms and he is struggling to get those images out of his head. He also said that their mother has become mentally confused since Malinga’s death, and Malinga’s 4-year-old daughter keeps asking for her.

“Majola was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and life for murder,” Ramkisson-Kara said.

She said the NPA welcomes the finalisation of the matter.

“Addressing the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide is one of our main priorities. We will continue to fight for justice for these victims. Well done to the prosecutor and the police on this successful prosecution,” Ramkisson-Kara added.
