Durban — As part of the celebration of World Food Day, the Do More Foundation will be showcasing the value of collective action by preparing over 570 000 bowls of Rainbow chicken soup for disadvantaged people over the next two weeks.
World Food Day is celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945 with an aim to raise awareness about humanitarian hunger and nutrition.
The Do More Foundation will be preparing meals across eight provinces with generous contributions from Crown National donating their Chef’s Choice Soup and RCL Foods’ brands donating Sunbake bread, Rama margarine and Rainbow chicken.
The partners will include the team at Meals on Wheels who will be cooking 140 155 litres of soup with their volunteers at sites in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng.
According to a statement issued by the foundation, this will be a collaborative event with 18 campaign partners, including RCL Foods, CHEP and Buckman who have recruited employee volunteers to help prepare the meals for Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in their local communities.
The foundation acknowledged that the once-off meals do not lead to sustainable change, as a result, their 2022 campaign will see numerous volunteers working with 22 ECD centres servicing over 900 children to establish food gardens.
It further stated that the volunteers would also be distributing height charts to encourage growth monitoring and hosting an exclusive nutrition training workshop, using resources printed through re-purpose for purpose programme.
In 2019, the foundation broke a world record for the most peanut butter sandwiches made in an hour, an event that took place with over 1 000 volunteers across 43 sites in South Africa.
Do More Foundation partnership manager Iris Naidoo said World Food Day “gives us the opportunity to raise awareness about these issues and highlight the role of collective impact in addressing the problems head-on”.
“General Household Survey data shows at least 2.5 million children experience hunger and live below the food poverty line. Recent child mortality audits also show that almost a third of children who die are severely malnourished.
“These markers showcase the need for us to work together and use the power of collective action to find sustainable solutions,” said Naidoo.
