The Lions' superiority on the attack laid the platform for their first win at Ellis Park over the Stormers on Saturday afternoon in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

A 30-23 victory ended a run of six losses against the Cape outfit in Johannesburg, but their inability to score four tries kept them from leapfrogging the inaugural URC champions on the points log.

While the Stormers were comprehensively outplayed on a wet Ellis Park, for a second weekend in a row they showed tremendous fight after trailing 24-6 at a stage to score for a battling losing bonus point.

Looking at that scoreline at halftime, the home side should've won by more and they collected a bonus point for four tries.

They ripped the Stormers apart and their three scores in the first half were typical Lions tries and that took the game away from their visitors.

It was too easy for them to find space on the outside of their opponents and twice in the opening exchanges former Lion Wandisile Simelane was beaten on the outside by runs of his former teammates.

The scores of centres Henco van Wyk and Marius Louw were arguably the best of the afternoon with the Van Wyk one probably edging it in terms of how good it was.

Not to discard the five-pointer by Stormers fullback Warrick Gelant or that of Lions scrumhalf Morne van den Berg.

Van Wyk'’s try started inside the Lions' half with fullback and Player of the Match Quan Horn breaking the line with the ball going through a few of his teammates' hands before the outside centre ran over the line for second time on the day.

Louw had pacey winger Edwill van der Merwe to thank for his score after the speedster sprinted down the touchline, chipped one of the last defenders and Louw was there to mop up for his side's third score.

Gelant was his magic self again on Saturday, but the inability of his fellow backline players to get on his wavelength on the attack, is probably what's causing the struggles for their side.

There is an expectancy of something happening when he touches the ball, and his score and try-assist show it, but without other playmakers, the Stormers are really struggling to get going on the attack.

With two games in hand, the Lions have placed themselves in a good position to boost their chances of reaching the URC playoffs. Another loss is making things difficult for the Capetonians.

They'll hope for a revival of their attacking prowess over the next few weeks to reignite their URC campaign.
