Netball South Africa (NSA) has officially announced the final SPAR Baby Proteas squad that will be flying the South African flag high following intense trials held over the weekend in Pretoria.
The team, comprising the country’s top young netball players, was selected after two days of demanding matches.
The trials were supervised by a panel of selectors including head coach Precious Mthembu, who said she was thoroughly impressed with the selection of players for the squad.
“They showcased exceptional skills and determination during the trials. We were looking for individuals who would put the team first and give their absolute best.
“It’s heartening to see the remarkable depth of talent among our U19 and U21 players. Their dedication and passion for the sport are truly encouraging, and I’m excited to see them take the court in our upcoming tournaments,” said Mthembu.
NSA president Cecilia Molokwane said she has immense confidence in the talent and potential of this crop of young players.
“They are an absolute delight to watch and I firmly believe they have what it takes to become future stars of the SPAR Proteas team,” Molokwane said.
The SPAR Baby Proteas squad will soon begin preparations for their international matches, with the 2024 SPAR Challenge at Ellis Park Arena in October as their immediate focus.
“I’m thrilled to see them gear up to represent our country at the SPAR Challenge, SPAR Championship and the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 in Gibraltar. The future of netball in our nation is bright indeed,” said Molokwane.
For those not selected, NSA plans to establish a comprehensive development programme to ensure they remain prepared for future opportunities.
