Land Rover has obviously been listening to the feedback - much of it negative - from media and public about its "Defender replacement" DC100 concept, because it's going to show what it coyly calls an updated version of the concept at the Los Angeles motor show later in November.
Brand director John Edwards admitted as much when he told Inside Line he'd been expecting mixed reactions - especially from die-hard Landy enthusiasts - when the DC100 and DC100 Sport were shown at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
"I was involved in the development of the new-generation Mini," he recalled, "and when we showed the concept to the owners' clubs, some of them wanted to kill us!"
The reaction to the DC100 reinforced what we wanted to do and told us that we're pretty much on the right track."
He added that the new Defender "must be capable, usable and abusable, and appropriate for the Third World market", bearing in mind the thousands of Defenders in use by the Red Cross, in the Australian Outback and all over Africa.
"We want to get back to our roots," he said, "but it would be nice if we could also sell it to the Californian surfer dude."
Which was as close as he would get to confirming that the new Defender would also be sold in North America.
