Durban - Day two of Africa’s Travel Indaba is under way at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban where buyers and exhibitors have been interacting and holding meetings over the continent’s unique travel and tourism offerings.

The event, one of Africa’s biggest events, kicked off earlier at the beachfront promenade with a ‘fun run’, followed by a tour operator-hosted buyer networking session and the South African Airways buyer breakfast at the Southern Sun Elangeni & Maharani Hotel.

On Wednesday South African Tourism acting CEO Themba Khumalo said over 19 000 meetings had been arranged at the conference for matchmaking between buyers and exhibitors.

Other activities for the day include the Strengthening & Enabling Economic Capabilities session, Tourism Awareness engagement, and the Bilateral meetings between countries.

With more than 4 000 delegates expected to attend, over 539 buyers who travelled from various countries across the world, and 126 authentic and uniquely African products and experiences, the Indaba is expected to generate about R72.5 million in income for the city’s economy.

Before closing off day two of the Indaba, guests will be treated to cocktails at the Ugu South Coast Tourism and an immersion experience in the city’s centre of entertainment at Florida Road and Legacy Umhlanga.

On Tuesday, Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu officially opened the largest tourism expo on the continent and hailed the people of KwaZulu-Natal for showing resilience after the province was stricken by deadly floods that caused infrastructure damage and further wrecked the ailing provincial economy.

Sisulu mentioned that, among other things, the indaba will focus on recovery from the pandemic and opportunities to combine business and leisure tourism and enhance intra-African travel and tourism.
